👋 Hi, Sabir here. Welcome to this week’s edition of Chino - simplifying Men’s fashion to help you dress well & look dapper!
I hope you are keeping your style in check and staying dapper!
This week, I want to speak with you about a piece of clothing that often gets ignored in the style conversation.
Socks!
You may think that because they are almost always covered by your pants and footwear, there is no need to think about their colour and styling.
Wrong! Your socks are not always hidden.
Even when wearing pants and footwear, there will certainly be times when your socks will be on show.
Whenever you sit somewhere (at work, on the train/subway, at a restaurant, etc), your pants will naturally sit higher. So, your socks will show.
Think about indoor social engagements where you remove your shoes. Again, your socks are on show.
With the above in mind, it’s imperative for you to start paying attention to how the styling of socks can complement your outfits.
The best place to start is by adopting the same colour-matching principles I’ve shared in previous editions of Chino.
The key principle is – to match the colour of your socks with the colour of another piece of clothing in your outfit.
Ideally, not be the same colour as your pants because you should allow for space separation of colour.
So, matching the colour with a piece of clothing other than your pants is more impactful (sweater/top/t-shirt, belt, scarf, or hat).
Notice how the navy socks (above image) can be matched with the turtle neck jumper that has a hint of navy blue.
Here’s another great example…
Notice how the red socks (above image) are being paired with a red/maroon neck warmer.
Play With Patterns
Once you’ve become comfortable with matching your solid colours, having a good mix of patterned socks will help take your sock game to the next level.
Here are some examples to inspire you…
Key Takeaways
Matching your socks with your outfits may seem like a small detail, but it can actually have a big impact on your overall look.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your socks complement your outfit and make you look more polished and put-together.
Above all, remember to choose socks that colour match another piece in your outfit (not your pants).
TOP TIP: Go one step further by choosing socks that match the formality and material of your outfit.
That’s a wrap! Have a dapper week, and see you soon! 💪
